Most of the material in this 2nd edition of Great British Marine Animals was the same as in the 1st edition, published 2003. New features included:
 
  • A foreword by WWF and the Marine Conservation Society
  • Details of 30 additional species (making 250 in total)
  • 90 new photographs (420 in total) showing the new species, such as the basking shark, and more spreads showing other aspects of those previously featured. These include unusual action shots of starfish and bass hunting, sea hares mating and crabs fighting over territory.
  • A new cover featuring the appealing tompot blenny and the basking shark
Great British Marine Animals was preceded by Marine Animals of the South West (1st edition 1996, 2nd edition 2000), also by Paul Naylor.
